Simple - it's an experiment.
When I'm awake, I'm probably thinking of ways to do cool1 things. Or what cool1 thing I'm going to do next. I like to play with an extremely wide variety of technologies and see how tightly I can integrate them. It doesn't always serve a practical purpose, but it sure is fun! I am truly a geek and I fully embrace that. I fully embrace what Doc Brown2 said - "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."
To be more specific about this specific site it's what I consider a modified tumblelog3 to aggregate everything from two-way GPS tracking, microblog comments from myself, photos from my phone, and a few other things that aren't publicly visible. It's all powered by Django4 which makes the craziest things I can think of for the internet only take a couple weeks to finish.
1 Well, it's cool in my head. And that's the only place it matters.
